Guidelines for Vacating a Rented Property

This check list has been provided to assist you when vacating your home. Careful attention to each item will reduce the possibility of incurring a debt at the end of your tenancy and ensure a positive vacate inspection.

You are responsible for rental payments and the property until all keys are returned.

THE SECRETS TO A SUCCESSFUL VACATING INSPECTION:

To assist you in achieving this standard, the following guide and checklist is designed to provide some helpful hints in preparing the property for your vacating inspection.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE

1. KITCHEN

Stove

  • Oven to be thoroughly cleaned and free of grease.
  • Grilling tray and surrounding areas to be thoroughly clean and free of grease.
  • Drip trays under elements to be thoroughly clean and free of grease.
  • Electric ovens may be pulled away from the wall to be cleaned. It’s amazing what can be found on the sides and underneath!
  • These areas to be thoroughly cleaned and free of grease.
  • Exhaust fan must be cleaned and bulb working.

General

  • Clean all walls, ceilings, floors, windows and throughout in general.
  • Clean out all cupboards and drawers in general with warm soapy water and leave open to air.
  • Remove and clean all light fittings and ensure all bulbs working.
  • Clean ceiling fans and venetians (do not put in washing machine) and/or wash and rehang curtains.

2. LAUNDRY

  • Clean in, around and under sinks and cupboards.
  • Clean all walls, ceilings, floors and throughout in general.
  • Clean light fitting and ensure bulbs working.
  • Clean venetians and/or wash curtains

3. TOILET

  • Clean in and around pedestal.
  • Clean under toilet seat and lid (the seat can easily be dismantled and washed in the laundry sink).
  • Clean all walls, ceilings, floors, windows and throughout in general.
  • Clean light fittings and ensure bulbs working.
  • Clean venetians and/or wash curtains

4. BATHROOM

  • Clean in, around and under vanity unit.
  • Clean walls, mirror and basin.
  • Clean all walls, ceilings, floors, windows and throughout in general.
  • Clean light fittings and ensure bulbs working.
  • Scrub shower and bath thoroughly.
  • Wash mildew off walls/ceiling.
  • Clean venetians and/or wash curtains
  • Clean shower glass and tracks.

5. LOUNGE AND BEDROOMS

  • Clean out built-in wardrobes and leave it open to air.
  • Clean all walls, ceilings, floors, windows and throughout in general.
  • Clean light fittings and ensure bulbs working
  • Clean venetians and/or wash curtains
  • Clean ceiling fans.

6. LIGHT BULBS

  • Replace all light bulbs where necessary.

7. WINDOWS

  • All windows to be cleaned inside and out, including tracks.
  • Curtain brackets should remain fixed to the wall.

8. FLYSCREENS

  • All fly screens to be cleaned and affixed to windows.

9. PORCHES

  • Clean all mildew etc from ceiling and timber cladding to front and rear of porches (where applicable).
  • Clean any glass and remove and clean light fittings and ensure bulbs working.

10. GARAGES AND CARPORTS

  • Any oil stains to be removed from driveway area.

11. EXTERIOR OF PROPERTY

  • Remove all spider webs and dirt marks etc.
  • Clean all gutters of leaves etc.
  • Clean fascias and eaves.

12. AFTER FURNITURE HAS BEEN REMOVED

  • Vacuum/sweep clean floors.
  • Have professional carpet cleaners clean the carpets (receipt required).
  • If pets were kept at property, have pest controller treat for fleas (receipt required).
  • Wipe sinks, basins, toilet, skirting boards etc.
  • Clean any marks off walls.

NOTE: Some areas need a little extra attention, they are:-
Stoves, windows and window tracks,
Fascias and eaves, mildew in bathrooms,
A little extra care in all these areas will preclude the need for additional cleaning at your expense.
